Mexican Leftist Party Resolved to Veto Energy Reform Mo Hong'e - Xinhua go to original
Mexico City - Mexico's leftist Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) unanimously agreed on Sunday to veto the energy reform proposed by the government of Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
During its 11th National Congress, the PRD (left) passed a resolution to instruct their legislators and officers to in no case support the federal government's presumed campaign to privatize the state-run Petroleos Mexicanos (Pemex).
Calderon in June presented an initiative about energy reform, which allows private or foreign firms to help explore deep-water oil reserves. It is Calderon's most ambitious economic reform attempt which is expected to reverse the big drop in output in the world's No. 6 producer, but the left-wing opposition and many ordinary Mexicans are wary of private involvement in the cherished oil sector.
The PRD also suggested movement should be carried out to crack down on corruption among the important functionaries of Pemex, as well as in the Petroleum Worker's Labor Union, which the PRD blamed for the heavy fall in output at Mexcio's oil fields. |
