| "If we have been joined by the past, we must now be joined by the present, and the hope and conviction of constructing a common future." -- President Calderón | | Mexico City - A united America is possible and that day will come, declared President Felipe Calderón at a dinner at Los Pinos with attendees of the First Regional Coordination Meeting of Latin American Countries with the aim of celebrating the Bicentennial, to be held in Mexico.
He hailed the fact that, during this meeting, it was agreed to create a Bicentennial Commission, in which 22 Latin American countries could propose cooperation programs to reinforce the long-awaited integration of Latin America.
He explained that the initiatives derived from the meeting will be presented at the 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in El Salvador next month.
The Mexican President told an audience including Secretary General of Latin America Enrique Iglesias and Álvaro Marchesi, Secretary General of the Organization of Latin American states that we will reach the Bicentennial with a more united continent, linked by democracy and the search for greater equity and justice to construct a better, different future in Latin America.
President Felipe Calderón considered that the Bicentennial of Latin American independence movements is a date that will further link the nations on this continent, which are joined by history and the ideals of justice, freedom and democracy, which they now share.
In this respect, he explained: If the past has linked us, we must now be joined by the present, and the hope and conviction of constructing a common future, he declared.
For his part, the Latin American General Secretary, Enrique Iglesias, declared that bicentennials are a way of looking at the future. "It is a way we can attempt to achieve the creation of a vigorous Latin America, one that is fair and has a presence in the world and on the international stage." |
