| President Felipe Calderón presided over the Fourth Session of the General Council of Scientific Research and Technological Development at the official Los Pinos residence. | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón presided over the Fourth Session of the General Council of Scientific Research and Technological Development at the official Los Pinos residence, during which the Special Program of Science, Technology and Innovation was approved 2008-2012 (PECiTI).
The President hailed the fact that PECiTI is already in place, particularly since it has been enriched by researchers, academics, businessmen and citizens and takes up recommendations from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
In his address, President Calderón said that he has made every effort to expand the budget for Science and Technology as much as possible, adding that public expenditure in this field must be complemented by more private financing.
He also pointed out that a public policy should be designed in keeping with economic, business and academic stimuli and incentives.
The 2008-2012 Special Program of Science, Technology and Innovation is the sectoral planning instrument that defines the actions to be carried out in the field of science, technology and innovation in Mexico over the next few years and its approval will enable a short-, medium- and long-term perspective to be established for these topics.
The General Council of Scientific Research and Technological Development is presided over by the President and comprises the Secretariats of Foreign Relations; Finance and Public Credit; Environment and Natural Resources; Energy; Economy; Agriculture, Livestock Raising and Food; Communications and Transport; Public Education and Health, as well as the Director General of the National Council on Science and Technology (CONACYT) and representatives of the academic, scientific, technological and business spheres.
During the Council’s session, the results and recommendations of the Evaluation of Innovation Policies in Mexico, conducted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) were presented.
Lastly, President Felipe Calderón asked members of the council to contribute, through the Secretariat of the Environment, to the Special Program against Climate Change, which could meet many of the country’s needs, not only as regards energy, but also in innovation, science and technology. |
