Mexico Projects Record Food Production for 2008 Associated Press go to original
Mexico City - Mexico appears to be surviving the worst of the world's food crisis.
Agriculture secretary Alberto Cardenas says he expects the sector to produce record amounts of vegetables, grains, meats and dairy products in 2008, thanks in part to heavy rains.
Cardenas says Mexico's agricultural sector has already produced 66 percent - or 129 million tons - of the 195 million tons of food projected for the national and international markets.
In 2007, food production reached 191 million tons.
But while production is up, officials say the bump is unlikely to affect consumer prices. |
