Mexico City - Former Guatemalan president Alfonso Portillo has been extradited from Mexico to Guatemala where he faces corruption charges, the attorney general's office said here Tuesday.

"The transfer of Alfonso Antonio Portillo Cabrera to the Republic of Guatemala was concluded today (Tuesday), according to the terms of the extradition treaty," a statement said.

The former president "was today handed to Guatemalan authorities."

Portillo took refuge in Mexico at the end of his four-year presidential term in 2004, after he lost legislative immunity from prosecution.

Mexico ordered Portillo extradited in 2006, but he appealed to Mexico's Supreme Court that it was unconstitutional to extradite him. The court ruled against him in January.

The former president gave his consent to the extradition in writing last Friday, the attorney general's office said.

Guatemalan authorities accuse Portillo of transferring 15.8 million dollars from the Defense Ministry's budget, of which 4.6 million disappeared.

Portillo's government received numerous corruption allegations, with several members suspected of opening European bank accounts.
