President Calderón Congratulates Senators from All Political Parties on Energy Reform Approval Presidencia de la República go to original
| Most favorable change in the hydrocarbon sector registered since 1938, President declares. | | Chiapas - On tour in the state of Chiapas, President Felipe Calderón hailed the legislative work of senators from all parties after they approved the package of energy bills this afternoon.
During the 2008 Business Meeting, organized by the Mexican Employees' Confederation, the President declared: “This is an important stage in national life, which is why it has proved hard to achieve; what you have done today warrants Mexicans’ recognition and support.”
At the event, held in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, President Calderón highlighted the work of senators from the National Action Party and the Institutional Revolutionary Party but above all, he congratulated legislators from the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) because, he said, they had taken a major step towards an alternative, dialogue and agreement.
“This, rest assured, is a good reform; and it is no exaggeration to say that it is the most positive change in the hydrocarbon sector the country has had since 1938," he declared.
The President said that if these modifications are also approved in the Chamber of Deputies, they will expand Petróleos Mexicanos' horizon of exploration and production and make more resources available for hiring the technology required by the international oil industry today.
Another advantage of the reform, explained the President, is that it will provide a more transparent Pemex, since it will reinforce the control and surveillance mechanisms and establish new instruments to ensure accountability, as well as creating an auditing committee.
He also pointed out that the reform creates a team of advisors for Pemex who will be independent of Government, the Trade Union, and political parties, who will be accountable to the firm and the owners of the firm, namely Mexicans.
“The aim of the reform is and always has been to increase the country's oil wealth for the benefit of Mexicans. Insofar as this reform achieves its objective, we will be able to speak of a successful reform. Another goal was to keep Pemex and our oil in Mexicans' and only Mexicans' hands. This goal has also been achieved,” he added. |
