Mexico City - A shootout that erupted when gunmen hurled a grenade at police has left two people dead and five wounded in Mexico's capital.

The city Public Safety Department says both of the dead are gunmen. The injured include two police and a man shot when a stray bullet tore through his home.

The shootout erupted Wednesday night when gunmen in a car tried to resist arrest. The armed men first claimed they were police, then offered a bribe.

When police ordered the men out of the car, they emerged with grenades. One of them threw a grenade at the officers. It failed to explode, but a shootout broke out.

More than 3,000 people have been killed across Mexico this year. Most of the deaths have been blamed on the drug trade.
