President Calderón Offers Support to Population Affected by Tabasco Floods Presidencia de la República go to original
| Governor Andrés Granier hails the President's solidarity and concern over Tabasco's residents. | | Tabasco - President Felipe Calderón traveled to the Municipality of Tenosique in the south of the state of Tabacso for a first-hand view of the areas flooded by heavy rains and the overflowing of various rivers in the region.
After boarding a helicopter to fly over the municipalities of Balancán, Jonuta and Centla, which in some areas are under water due to the overflowing of the Usumacinta River, the President expressed Federal Government's solidarity with and support of Tabasco's residents who are suffering from the effects of the bad weather conditions.
During a walk through various blocks of Colonia Pueblo Unido, and accompanied by state governor Andrés Granier Melo and Mayor of Tenosique, Antonio Solá, the President explained to the population that the first thing that has to be done at this stage of the contingency is to save and transfer the shelters, so as not to endanger lives and to enable flood victims to be dealt with in a timely, orderly fashion.
During a meeting at which the situation in this part of the state was explained, Governor Granier Melo thanked the president for his coordination and streamlining of support for the population affected.
“Because we are a grateful people, a people who thank those who help us and Felipe Calderón has always supported Tabasco, regardless of party differences," he explained.
President Calderón told the population that members of the Federal Police force, army and navy, in conjunction with local authorities, will patrol the flooded neighborhoods to guarantee those currently housed in the shelters that their homes will be duly protected and their belongings safe.
He also called on the residents of Tabasco who have been affected to follow the indications of the authorities regarding health to prevent water-borne diseases, since in some cases, the waters are over a meter high.
He reported that once the contingency is over, brigades will be organized to review the damage to houses in the region, in conjunction with the authorities, together with the type of assistance required to ensure their repair or to facilitate residents' relocation, if necessary.
"We will support you, Tenosique, we are here with Governor Granier, Mayor Antonio Solá and the people of Tenosique, who are facing hard times. But this will not prevent governments from accompanying people and providing all the support they need," he declared.
President Calderón was also accompanied by Secretaries of the Interior, Health and Social Development, Juan Camilo Mouriño Terrazo, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos and Ernesto Cordero Arroyo, respectively. |
