Vallarta author Bob Lamb will soon be out and about promoting his new book of short stories, Lone Tree.

Check it out on Amazon.com

Vallarta author Bob Lamb soon will be appearing here at book signings and presentations for his book, Lone Tree, a collection of stories of "wisdom, humor, The Great Depression." In a tone reminiscent of Will Rogers and Garrison Keillor, Bob takes readers on "a poignant journey of mating, dating, dancing and working." The setting is during The Great Depression in Lone Tree, Indiana.

I know Bob, a general with umpteen advanced degrees, a sweetheart, who is very funny, and you will enjoy him at your gatherings. Lone Tree may be ordered at Amazon.com. You can email him at boblamb(at)yahoo.com.

Another author Linda Trapp, a Ph.D. psychologist who has written three books while living here, has a terrible story to tell when crossing the border with her husband, Bob, in their car. Linda's book, Ornamental Plants and Flowers of Tropical Mexico, is a popular seller. Email her at lindaatrapp(at)yahoo.com. Click HERE to read Linda's story.

Becas Vallarta's first of a series of breakfasts will be at Barrio Sur, Pulpito 122, on Wednesday, November 12, at 9:30 am. Popular Coco's Kitchen will provide the breakfast. Tickets purchased in advance, for $150 pesos, same price as last year, help provide educational scholarships for the children of the Vallarta area. Polly Vicars has tickets - call her at 223-1371.

The Old Town Art Walk opens Wednesday, October 29, 6-10 pm, running through the end of May. The 16 participating galleries will be decorated with a theme of Day of the Dead, celebrated in Mexico every November 1 and 2. Click HERE to view 2008-2009 ArtWalk map.

On the south side, Galleria Dante, Basilio Badillo 269, features "artists in residence" in "Open Studios." The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 10 am-5 pm. Artists Cherie Sibley, Peter Spataro and Pipo Brockman continue with their art classes and workshops.

An exhibition of art by some Vallarta artists is at the airport

The Puerto Vallarta Gourmet Festival is November 13-23 this year. Get those gourmet appetites ready!

The Vallarta Orchid Society meets Saturday, October 25, at 1 pm at the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, discussing "Fragrant Orchids."

Kit Kat on Pulpito is open with new owners, Robert and Jose, who are from Mexico City. Kathy Overly will be doing new menus a little later on in the season.

Think a lot of us are counting our pennies these days. The Jalisco state government is restructuring its budget priorities with the expected drop in revenue because of the global financial crisis and a fall in oil prices. This undoubtedly will affect Puerto Vallarta's government.

Well-know producer and director Tencha Avila reports the death of Patricia Elisar, known to Vallarta theater-goers. She performed in Tencha's productions here from 1998-2005. These plays were Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women," Marsha Newman's "Night Mother," and three productions of Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues." Tencha had hoped Patricia would be in the leading role of Tencha's new play, "Angie's Fire," which will have a dramatic reading on December 8 in New York City.

Five police died and three were hurt in a night grenade and gun attack out in Jalisco state. Officers were carrying out a "routine check of a suspect car," two other cars pulled up and fired shots and threw grenades, according to a Jalisco police spokesman. Some 57 persons have died in suspected drug-related attacks in August in Jalisco state, according to the newspaper, El Universal. As of this writing, Puerto Vallarta officials are asking the state to send in more police or other assistance - seems to be helping here, for now.

Marazul on the beach is a beautiful restaurant open to Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre mountains on both sides. You can enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner, from 8 am-midnight. Furnishings are beautiful. Interesting chairs of exotic wood are comfortable for sitting and enjoying a drink. The dinner menu primarily is seafood. My friend and I, both world travelers, thought the Hindu Chicken Curry, would appeal to us. We thought it was very good. Alma Corona, our hostess, is attentive and thoughtful. She has some specials for you, too - just ask. For reservations, call (322) 223-1840.

Casa Magna Marriott here is committed to providing opportunities for the next generation. It is launching a six-month hospitality training program for young people from challenging backgrounds. Nine trainees are gaining employability skills that otherwise might be limited for them.

Legal access to abortion, available since April 2007 in the Mexican capital, Mexico City, should be extended to the rest of the country, according to a study conducted jointly by the Colegio de Mexico, the US-based non-profit Guttmacher Institute and the Mexican office of Population Council. The rate of illegal abortions reported exceeds the average for developing countries. The total number reached 880,000 in 2006, up 64 percent from 1990. One out of every six women who had an abortion were treated for complications in public hospitals. Studies have reported that illegal abortions are the fourth or fifth leading cause of death among Mexican women. Mexico has moved to the forefront on the issue of abortion with the legislation of abortion in Mexico City.

Well, this week the power was out one night, maybe two nights for some. We enjoyed watching the rain, the traffic trying to maneuver, and hearing flute and violin music on the wind. Lightning came so close, I was seeing bands of black for awhile. The high surf also is wonderful to watch with the changing waves.
