Largest Vessel in History of Mexican Ports Docks in Lázaro Cárdenas

Mexico City - The largest container transporter in the history of Mexican ports arrived in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, according to the region’s Integral Port Administration (API).
Secretary of Communications and Transport Luis Téllez reported that this is proof of people's interest in Mexican ports, not only as regards merchandise operations but also as regards investment.
Today, he declared, there is interest in Hong Kong, the Middle East and certain European nations in submitting tenders for Mexico's ports. In the case of the port of Lázaro Cárdenas, tenders will be accepted for a new container terminal and a terminal specializing in automobiles.
At approximately 1:05 am, “Chastine Maersk,” owned by Maersk Line shipping company and flying a Danish flag arrived at Lázaro Cárdenas port terminal.
Once it had docked at the container base, 625 containers (measuring between 20 and 40 feet) with an approximate weight of 8,450 tons began to be unloaded, while 627 containers were loaded.
Chastine Maersk, measuring a total of 346.98 m, and with a capacity for 6,600 TEUs (containers measuring from 20 to 40 feet) was carrying 4,384 containers.
Maersk Line Mexico reported that vessels of this size are manned by a total of 27 crew members, including the captain. The route they usually cover begins in the port of Kwangyan, Korea, ends in the port of Balboa, in Panama, and is undertaken every seven weeks.
The last vessel of a similar size to dock at this port was Maersk Seletar, with a length of 318.7 m, although there are larger ships such as EMMA Maersk, measuring from 366 to 397 m. whose arrival at this or any other port is conditioned by the movements of the freight it is transporting.
Protocol dictates that on the first visit by this type of vessel, civil and military authorities and special guests pay a courtesy visit.
On this occasion, the Secretary of Economic Development of Michoacán, Eloy Vargas Arreola and Director General of the Lázaro Cárdenas API Armando Palos accompanied several authorities, such as Port Migration Delegate Ismael Abarca and Head of Sanitary Jurisdiction No. 8, Jesús Cazares, who were received by the captain of the Danish ship.
