Mexican Navy Detains 15 Cuban Migrants

Mexico City - The Mexican Navy says it has detained a speedboat off the Caribbean coast carrying 15 undocumented Cuban migrants.
The Navy says 14 men and one woman have been found about 70 miles (110 kilometers) southeast of Isla Mujeres, an island near Cancun.
A news release the Navy sent Thursday noted the Cubans were given food and medical attention and taken to the mainland, where they were turned over to prosecutors.
The statement did not mention whether the vessel bore U.S. registration numbers. Immigrant traffickers frequently steal fishing boats in Florida to smuggle Cuban migrants to Mexico. The migrants then continue by land to the U.S.
Mexico signed an agreement to return undocumented Cuban migrants to the island. It takes effect later this month. |
