Presidents of Mexico and Cuba Hail Strengthening of Bilateral Relations

President Calderón (L) thanked President Castro for his invitation to visit Cuba and invited him to visit Mexico. These visits will be made in 2009 on dates to be arranged through diplomatic channels.
Salvador de Bahia, Brazil - Mexican President Felipe Calderón met this afternooon with President of Cuba Raúl Castro Ruz as part of their participation in the Latin American and Caribbean Summit on Integration and Development, CALC.

The meeting, the first interview between the two presidents, provided an occasion for them to express their mutual satisfaction over the regeneration and strengthening of bilateral relations, which has enabled specific, positive results to be obtained in the various spheres of the shared agenda.

In particular, they hailed the results achieved on the basis of the passage of the Memorandum of Understanding to Guarantee a Legal, Orderly, Safe Migratory Flow, signed in October, and repeated their commitment to combatting the flow of persons, discouraging undocumented migratory flows and above all, guaranteeing the security and total respect of migrants’ human rights.

They also discussed the fight against drug trafficking and agreed over the importance of increasing bilateral cooperation regarding efforts to combat organized crime.

As for the bilateral agenda, the two leaders expressed their satisfaction over Cuba’s recent joining of the Río Group, under the Mexico Pro Tempore Secretaryship, at times when regional integration has become a crucial instrument for coping with the challenge of globalization.

Lastly, President Calderón thanked President Castro for his invitation to visit Cuba and invited him to visit Mexico. These visits will be made in 2009 on dates to be arranged through diplomatic channels.
