Senator: Next Up, Power Reform David Biller - Business News Americas go to original
| Rubén Camarillo | | Mexico will reform its power sector next year, according to senator and energy committee secretary Rubén Camarillo (ruling PAN party).
After a long-fought struggle, Mexico's congress late this year succeeded in approving a reform that was primarily focused on state oil company Pemex, with some measures included for renewable and sustainable energy.
"The other part of the reform is coming because we haven't finished. The electricity sector part is coming," Camarillo announced.
"Don't be scared, don't be scared," Camarillo told a crowd that responded with laughter. "If we could do it with [oil], we can do it with electricity."
The proposal, whether proposed by the executive branch or the energy committee, will be made toward the end of 2009, he said.
This will give congress enough time to organize the forums needed to debate the issue, the senator told reporters on the sidelines.
"What I want to make very clear from this moment on is we are not going to allow this to be used as a political tool as was done in the case of oil. We hope political parties can deal with power with the same professionalism with which they tackled oil," he said.
Camarillo did not give direct indications as to what the reform would entail except that it would touch state power companies CFE, Luz y Fuerza del Centro (LyFC) and related issues.
Companies that have cogeneration or that generate power for self-consumption are obligated to sell surplus power to CFE, he said.
Camarillo was speaking at energy ministry Sener's presentation of its 2008-17 forecast for the energy sector. |
