| “He’s recognized the effort we’ve carried out and showed a willingness to keep collaborating,” Calderon said about Obama in an interview. | | Mexican President Felipe Calderon said his country’s efforts to fight drug traffickers won’t be effective if the U.S. doesn’t do more to reduce demand for illicit substances under President-elect Barack Obama.
“He’s recognized the effort we’ve carried out and showed a willingness to keep collaborating,” Calderon said about Obama in an interview today with Mexico City-based Radio Formula. “But it requires stronger and more forceful action.”
Calderon said there isn’t enough understanding on the international level, and especially in the U.S., of the importance of joint action to confront organized crime.
Violence related to organized crime and drug trafficking has caused more than 4,900 deaths in Mexico this year, according to local press tallies. Mexican cartels sell $13.8 billion a year worth of marijuana, cocaine, heroin and amphetamines to U.S. drug users, according to White House figures.
