President Felipe Calderón Urges Workers’ and Employers’ Sector to Defend Mexicans‘ Employment Presidencia de la República go to original
Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón called on the workers’ and employers’ sectors to focus their efforts and draw up a joint agenda to protect jobs in 2009.
“I would urge you to defend employment in a shared effort between Government and Society, the employers' and workers' sectors and the various orders of government." I hope next year will see Mexicans ready to fight to defend their jobs and our economy and that we will confirm the measures that have given results and take others," declared the President.
He said that the world is going through difficult times but added that Mexico has several elements that will enable it to reduce the impact of the international situation, since clear measures have been adopted that will help maintain the growth of the economy.
"We have done our homework. We have conducted public finances responsibly. Each step of the nation’s life has witnessed the responsibility of the country’s workers’ sector and representatives of the business sector," he explained.
Addressing an audience of business and workers' leaders, President Felipe Calderón closed Ordinary Session No. 95 of the INFONAVIT General Assembly and received a notarized certificate proving the delivery of the millionth housing credit during the first two years of his government.
“To give you some idea, that is twice the number of credits handed over during the first two years of the previous administration and it is worth remembering, in order to gauge the importance of this delivery of a million credits in two years, suffice it to say that the first million INFONAVIT credits were delivered in 20 years, in other words, from 1972 to 1992," he declared.
Accompanied by secretaries of Labor, Social Welfare, Sedesol, Economics and Energy: Javier Lozano Alarcón; Ernesto Cordero Arroyo, Gerardo Ruiz Mateos and Georgina Kessel Martínez, respectively as well as Director General del IMSS, Juan Molinar Horcasitas, he pointed out that these million credits involved an investment of $280 billion pesos, over three times what had been invested in similar periods.
He announced that in 2009, the This is Your House Program, through which Federal Government helps the poorest families by paying the down payment on a hose will be used mainly to purchase housing built using environmentally responsible and energy saving measures.
He explained that government and institutions such as INFONAVIT develop green mortgage programs that permit the incorporation into new housing developments of solar water heaters, water saving bulbs and water saving valves.
He said that these are small actions that improve the environment and families’ economies as well as national public finances, since families save an average of 240 pesos a month on their electricity bills.
For example, he said, there are families that save 30, 40 and 50% of their mortgage payments in lower energy consumption while Federal Government, which subsidizes half the electricity consumption of families with the lowest incomes has significant savings. |
