Recently, the prices of seafood has risen between 15 and 20 percent.
Mexico City - Mexican members of Parliament of the opposition Partido de la Revolucion Institucional party (PRI) and Partido de la Revolucion Democratica party (PRD) termed as alarming on Tuesday the national strike of fishermen, amid the current economic crisis.

Over 2,000 boats of the Fishing Fleet are in ports of both national coasts, demanding a cut in the price of fuels and greater attention to the sector by the government.

PRD legislador Alejandro Sanchez said the losses caused by this measure exceed 300 billion pesos, around $22 million.

He remarked that 350,000 direct or indirect jobs have been affected and if they add to the 400,000 jobs lost in 2008, the situation turns critical.

Besides, the prices of seafood rose between 15 and 20 percent.

Faced with that panorama, they requested immediate presence of Alberto Cardenas, head of the Secretary's Office for Agriculture, Cattle Raising, Food Provision and Fishing, and Ramon Corral, president of the National Commission for Aquaculture and Fishing to find a solution to the conflict.

PRI legislator Horacio Garza highlighted that urgent measures are necessary to satisfy the fishing sector, and requested replacement of both officials.

They urged authorities to subsidize the sector for then to be able to finance their activities.
