Mexico Key Player in the International System: President Calderón Presidencia de la República go to original
| Calderón states that Mexico’s attendance of Davos Forum is to position the country as an attractive place for investment. | | Davos, Switzerland - President Felipe Calderón declared that Mexico’s presence in Davos, Switzerland consolidates Mexico's leadership as a responsible player in the global system.
He said that although Mexico currently faces considerable challenges, his government is determined to face and overcome them.
At a press conference, the President called for care to be taken when creating expectations about the Mexican economy, since this inhibits the decision to invest in the country.
"I think it is as wrong to raise excessive or baselessly optimistic expectations as it is to raise increasingly negative expectations that may also lack a solid basis. Creating negative expectations also inhibits economic agents' decisions; investment decisions and consumer decisions are also postponed," he added.
Prior to the inauguration of the World Economic Forum 2009, President Calderón declared that he prefers to adopt a balanced, realistic position on economic issues, adding that he prefers to concentrate on what can be done to minimize the impact of the crisis on employment and thereby achieve a scenario that will affect the popular economy as little as possible.
"The key is to see what we can do to reverse the situation, reduce its effects and maximize the possibilities of increasing and protecting Mexicans' employment and income," he stated.
During the press conference, the Mexican president reported on the activities he will undertake at the Economic Forum. He remarked that during his meeting with ex-President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de León, they focused on the outlook for the world economy.
He remarked that one of the aims of Mexico’s attendance of the Economic Forum is to present and position Mexico as an attractive place for international investment.
It is therefore crucial for Mexico for members of this forum to find out about what has been achieved in the country, the reforms that have been promoted by the Mexican government and the Mexican congress, the progress we have achieved, the changes that have been made to government's fiscal structure as regards pensions and energy, which provides us with a much more objective, clearer panorama about the economic transformation that is taking place in the country.
Later in the day, President Calderón attended the inauguration of the World Economic Forum and then the dinner hosted by the President of the Forum, Klaus Schwab. |
