President Calderón Confirms Mexico’s Commitment to Promoting Sustainable Global Development Presidencia de la República go to original
| President Felipe Calderón participates in the Latin American session entitled, “A Hub for Sustainability.” | | Davos, Switzerland - The Presidency reported that Mexican President Felipe Calderón participated in the Latin American session entitled, “A Hub for Sustainability,” at which dignitaries, businessmen, specialists and social leaders in sustainable development had the opportunity to put forward and debate projects related to the urgency of applying an economic model that will guarantee the peaceful coexistence of mankind and the environment.
By way of a welcome and introduction to the event, Presidents of Mexico, Felipe Calderón and Colombia, Álvaro Uribe, delivered a brief address.
President Calderón pointed out that Mexico's environmental development agenda has incorporated the challenge of promoting economic growth that will reconcile conservation and environmental protection policies with development strategies.
The Mexican President also mentioned the Green Fund, a Mexican proposal that includes developing and developed countries to combat global warming and promote sustainable practices.
Latin America is home to much of the planet's biodiversity, and due to the development transition which most of the countries in the region are undergoing, it has an enormous potential for eliminating environmental degradation in terms of the promotion of renewable energies, ecological and territorial regulations and the conservation of biodiversity.
As a result of the broad, productive discussions at this session, leaders and directors agreed to boost Latin American cooperation in this respect and project a suitable atmosphere abroad for investment and the transition to green economies.
In addition to the Presidents of Mexico and Colombia, the event was also attended by top-level representatives of various organizations and institutes interested in sustainable development issues in Latin America such as the Inter-American Bank of Development (IBD) and the National Chilean Copper Corporation (CODELCO). |
