PV Convention Center to Open March 25

Puerto Vallarta's convention center will open as planned on March 25, 2009.
Jalisco's Tourism Department recently announced that Puerto Vallarta's controversial convention center, which was scheduled to be completed on March 25, 2009 at a cost of $200 million pesos, will open as planned, but without electricity, water or even an operator.

Sedeur, Jalisco's Urban Development Agency, recently nullified bidding for a private concessionaire to manage the state-financed trade show center because none of the national or international bidders met all of the state government's requirements. Sedeur is now looking to either reopen the bidding process or rework its proposal to accommodate at least one of the companies that has already submitted a bid.

The long-awaited convention center took almost three years to build amid prolonged controversy. Located on the fringes of El Salado estuary between the Puerto Vallarta International Airport and the city's hotel zone, environmentalists fought hard to halt its progress, and members of the Vallarta Business Owners' Association complained that the center was poorly planned and located, with deficient infrastructure and sub-standard access routes. But in the end, realizing they were fighting a losing battle, both groups were forced to give up their struggle.

In an effort to strengthen the Banderas Bay region's position as a sound business and cultural destination, Jalisco's neighboring state of Nayarit is also building a convention center in the nearby resort of Nuevo Vallarta.
