Spanish Castellón to host Beach Soccer European Qualifier Hans Vandamme - Worldwide Beach Soccer
| On February 26 Castellón officially opened its doors for the Beach Soccer family, when a kick-off press conference took place. | | For the first time in its history the Spanish city of Castellón de La Plana will be the host of a major international Beach Soccer tournament and welcomes a completely new brand of entertainment to the Mediterranean pearl. At least 24 European teams (tbc*) will travel to the popular tourist destination to dispute the tournament that will qualify the European powerhouses for Beach Soccer’s most prestigious showdown, the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2009, to take place from November 16-22.
From June 7 to 14, the old continent’s nations will rumble at Castellon’s Gurugu Beach for five tickets to the United Arab Emirates and for another shot at the World title.

Joan Cusco, BSWW’s Vice-President, Gabino Renales, BSWW’s General Manager and Ramiro Amarelle, Spain’s National Beach Soccer team Captain, were welcomed by Alberto Fabra Part, mayor of Castellon and Vicent Sales y Mateu, the city’s Sports councillor to sign the necessary documents and officially present the arrival of the exhilarating football modality at the Spanish coastal city.
The Castellon Qualifier will be the fourth out of six qualifying tournaments after the ones held in Montevideo (Uruguay), Puerto Vallarta (Mexico) and Tahiti Nui for the CONMEBOL, CONCACAF and Oceania zones respectively. Later this year Durban will host the African Qualifier, while the Asian zone Qualifier’s host still has to be determined.
Last year, the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2008 Qualifier Benidorm was not only registered as the biggest International Beach Soccer event in the history of the sport (24 participants), but also made history by delivering four of the top six finishers at the global showpiece. Spain, Portugal, Italy and Russia all impressed at Prado Beach and demonstrated why Europe is considered the reigning Beach Soccer continent on the planet.
