President Felipe Calderón swears in Mexico United against Crime Board of Directors 2009-2012
Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón declares that civic participation is crucial for triumphing in the fight against crime, which is why it is essential to demand specific actions to combat the lack of security from authorities throughout the country.

“I am convinced that it is only with a strong society and strong citizens that help prevent, denounce and demand that the authorities reject illegality that we will truly be able to construct the safe Mexico we all aspire to," he added.

At the Citadel of Chapultepec Castle, when he swore in the new Board of Directors of the Mexican United against Crime Organization, the President declared that the division between the branches of power should no longer be used by criminals as a loophole for impunity. He urged the legislative branch to approve the pending bills his government has sent to Congress regarding security, such as elimination of ownership, retail drug dealing, PGR reform and heavier sentences for kidnappers.

In this respect, he said that it is important to utilize the assets confiscated from criminals as soon as possible in order to destroy their financial structure and protect citizens.

“From this forum, I would urge legislators from all parties to discuss, enrich and eventually approve the initiatives the Executive Branch has submitted to Congress," he said.

Accompanied by Public Security Secretary and Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora, President Calderón considered that given the situation the country is experiencing, Mexico has no time to lose, which is why he stressed the importance of joint work between the branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial, in order to continue fighting organized crime and the lack of security.

“Because there will only be progress in Mexico if we manage to provide security and justice for all," declared the President, confirming Federal Government's commitment in the fight against the lack of security in the country. This has been borne out during this administration by the release of 438 kidnap victims, the arrest of 522 kidnappers and the dismantling of 69 gangs involved in this crime and in February and March, the arrest of 53 alleged kidnappers.

He also mentioned the progress in the National Model of Evaluation and Reliability Control which has permitted the evaluation of over 40% of the staff working in the most delicate areas of the various public security offices, in other words, 8,000 police officers.

President Calderón urged local governments to redouble efforts to make Mexico safer and stressed the need to make more effective, timely use of the resources available for local police forces for this purpose.

“Local governments have the full support of Federal Government for dealing with crime, since it is only by combining efforts and acting in a jointly responsible way that we will be able to protect society from those attempting to damage it," he explained.
