CONMEBOL Trio Book Dubai Ticket BeachSoccer.com go to original
| Brazil successfully extended their continental title in Montevideo (Gustavo Zamora/Dante Fernandez) | | The mighty South American triumvirate, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay will represent their continent at the world’s premier beach soccer event for a 5th straight year after finishing in the top 3 at the Estadio Arena del Plata. The defending world champions again displayed their supremacy on the sand, racing past the rest of the bunch with spectacular beach soccer, but unlike on former occasions, traditional aces Argentina and Uruguay had to show a lot more poise to overcome up-and-coming squads like Chile, Paraguay and surprise-act Ecuador to book their tickets for the global showpiece.
Beach soccer in South America is dramatically showing signs of improvement, and the unqualified success of the Montevideo showdown served notice of the fact that the sport success is set to continue far beyond Brazil’s Copacabana Beach.
Unexpected semi finalists Ecuador were close to make history in their first ever participation to a world cup qualifier, as they forced the Argentinean guard, led by an decisive Hilaire-trio, to secure their participation to the Dubai spectacle in the extra three minutes of play. It was Argentina goalie Marcelo Salgueiro who scored the last minute winner putting the final 9-8 on the scoreboard, which made an end to the most nerve-wracking game of the tournament. Although the Ecuadorians didn’t qualify for Dubai, they aren’t returning homewards empty-handed, as individual revelation of the tournament and second top scorer in Montevideo, Conforme, was chosen as most valuable player at Playa Pocitos.
Carrying the weight of facing the world’s best side in front of 4000 exuberant home fans proved to be too much for the Celeste. The stage was ready for a Uruguayan party, but the Brazilians played their part as party-crashers marvellously as they overwhelmed their opponents 10-1 to extend their continental reign and travel to Dubai as red-hot favourites for the title.
Besides snatching top spot, some of the Brazilian players were also rewarded individually. Mão was crowned as most valuable goalkeeper, and trousersnake Andre saw his unbelievable goal-getter instinct remunerated with the top scorer trophy.
