US Navy Jet Violates Airspace of Mexico, Officials Confirm San Diego Union-Tribune go to original
| Navy EA-6B Prowler | | A Navy EA-6B Prowler aircraft briefly violated Mexican airspace while operating off that country's coast last week, Navy officials confirmed yesterday.
The twin-engine electronics-warfare jet was operating from the Ronald Reagan carrier strike group in the Navy's Southern California operating area southwest of San Diego when the incident occurred about 7:15 p.m. Thursday, said Cmdr. Dora Lockwood, a spokeswoman for the Point Loma-based 3rd Fleet command.
Mexican airspace extends 12 miles out from its shore, said Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown, a Naval Air Forces spokesman. The Navy requests permission from Mexican authorities if an aircraft is to fly closer to the coast.
Lockwood said the violation was inadvertent. She confirmed it was limited to two miles and less than one minute of flying time before the pilot steered back into international airspace. The 3rd Fleet immediately reported the incident to Mexican officials, who did not express concern, she said. |
