(AFP/Guadalupe Perez) | | Washington – President Barack Obama says the violence spilling over from Mexico's fight against drug cartels has gotten out of hand and is a serious threat to U.S. border communities.
Administration officials said this past week that hundreds of federal agents, along with high-tech surveillance gear and drug-sniffing dogs, are heading to the Southwest to help Mexico in the fight.
Obama says the U.S. needs to reduce its demand for illegal drugs and limit the flow of cash and guns heading south into Mexico. The president says the U.S. must recognize that "this is a two-way street."
Obama tells CBS' "Face the Nation" in an interview broadcast Sunday that he is considering increasing the number of National Guard troops on the border. But first he wants to see if his new strategy works. |
