Mexico Studying Plan to Issue Stock in Pemex Andres R. Martinez - Bloomberg go to original
Mexico’s government is considering issuing shares in state-owned Petroleos Mexicanos that would trade locally and offer dividends based on the company’s performance, Reuters reported, citing two unidentified sources.
Holders of the security wouldn’t have voting rights or any say in the company’s operations, Reuters reported, citing two people who have seen the study. A finance ministry spokesman denied there were any such plans, Reuters reported.
A Pemex spokesman referred calls from Bloomberg News to the finance ministry. A spokeswoman there didn’t have an immediate response.
Mexico expropriated the assets of U.S. and U.K. oil companies in 1938, forming Pemex later that year. Private and foreign investment in Mexico’s oil industry has been banned since.
