During her speech at the dinner she hosted for President Calderón and his wife Margarita Zavala, the Queen told the Mexican President:
“Indeed, Mexico’s participation in the London Summit in the course of this week testifies to the essential function of your nation in world economic affairs."
Queen Elizabeth said that Mexico and the United Kingdom cooperate very closely in international trade and sustainable development.
“In fact, in our association regarding climate change, we have several reasons to thank Mexico for the role you have played in gathering together developed and developing countries," he said.
She recalled that Great Britain and Mexico are old friends. She mentioned that the United Kingdom was the first country in Europe to acknowledge Mexico's Independence and hoped that President Calderón's state visit would strengthen these links for the future.
She highlighted the fact there is a long history of educational and cultural exchanges. “Our universities began to accept Mexican students in the 1940s and nowadays, nearly two thousand students attend our universities every year, many with scholarships from the British government,” she said.
For his part, President Felipe Calderón said that the two nations have had a deep friendship for nearly two centuries.
He stated that, "Now we are both aware that the world requires shared leadership to be able to cope with and solve mankind's great challenges jointly.
He said that Mexico is playing a much more active role so that that voice of Latin America will be heard throughout the world, because the region wishes to play a key role in today’s major changes.
“Today, Mexico has resumed its leadership of the region and is representing it at multilateral forums. One of the problems that most concerns us are the effects that climate change may have on humanity over the next few decades. I hail the fact that the United Kingdom is one of the leading countries in the issue of sustainable development," he declared. |
