(Reuters/Henry Romero) | | Mexico City - Billionaire Carlos Slim said on Tuesday his telecommunications and construction empire will create 34,000 new jobs in Mexico this year, despite the global economic downturn.
Slim, one of the world's richest men and one of Mexico's largest employers, controls telecoms giants America Movil (AMXL.MX) and Telmex (TMX.N)(TELMEXL.MX), construction firm CICSA (CICSAB1.MX) and conglomerate Grupo Carso (GCARSOA1.MX), which has industrial, retail and infrastructure businesses.
"There will be 34,000 additional new jobs created from what there was in December 2008," the tycoon told journalists at an event to promote boxing in Mexico City.
Many of those jobs would be in construction sector as the government invests billions of dollars in infrastructure plans -- including major new highways -- aimed at reducing the impact of the U.S. recession on Mexico, Slim said.
Analysts watching Mexico's economy forecast a 1.92 percent decline in 2009 gross domestic product, as U.S. demand dries up for the country's manufactured goods. Mexico sends more than 80 percent of its exports to its northern neighbor.
Mexico's jobless rate spiked higher than expected in January to 5.0 percent.
