Mexico Gets $1.5B Loan for Health, School Programs Wire Reports
The World Bank approved a $1.5 billion loan to Mexico to support health and education programs for poor children, the bank said Thursday.
The government will use the funds to help residents under the Oportunidades program, which gives cash to families who agree to keep their children in school and provide them with health care, the bank said on its Web site.
"This loan represents an integral part of a scaled up assistance program to Mexico which is expected to reach about $4 billion in 2009," said Axel van Trotsenburg, World Bank Director for Mexico and Colombia, in the statement. "This operation seeks to support the government in its efforts to relieve the social impact that the country is facing as a consequence of the economic slowdown."
According to the World Bank, the Oportunidades program has succeeded in lowering the dropout rates in schools among students in sixth and seventh grade by nine percentage points and increased the use of preventive health services. |
