Mexico Approves New US Ambassador Agence France-Presse go to original
| Carlos Pascual | | Mexico City – Mexico's foreign minister said that Mexico had approved the country's new US ambassador, whom officials confirmed to be Cuban-American Carlos Pascual.
Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa said Mexico had approved the new ambassador several days ago, although she did not reveal his name.
Foreign ministry officials confirmed that the candidate was Carlos Pascual, former Ukraine ambassador and current vice president and director of foreign policy at the Brookings Institution in Washington, where he focuses on post-conflict stabilization.
Mexico and the United States have in recent months increased cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, including US promises to help reduce the amount of illegal weapons traveling south of the border.
Espinosa also confirmed that the next North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) meeting would take place in Mexico in August, and that Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper would take part in an official visit around the same time.
NAFTA, one of the world's largest trade pacts, was signed by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and came into effect on January 1, 1994. |
