Mexico City — Mexico's national security spokesman says drug violence dipped by 26 percent across the country in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same period last year.

Monte Alejandro Rubido says 1,960 people were killed in drug violence from January to March compared to 2,655 drug-related deaths during the same period of 2008.

Rubido says the drop in killings is a sign the government is advancing in its drug war.

The government presented the figures Sunday, days ahead of President Barack Obama's first visit to Mexico. Coordination in the drug war is expected to dominate talks between Obama and President Felipe Calderon.

In March, the federal government sent thousands more soldiers to the border to quell escalating violence.
