If you weren't in Puerto Vallarta for the 2009 International Fireworks Art Symposium, which took place from April 20-24, you won't want to miss the 2nd Annual National Fireworks Competition, scheduled to take place at 8:30 pm on May 30 at the Augustine Contreras Flowers Sports Stadium.

Featuring Castillos de Morillos created by eight national fireworks companies from various locations throughout Mexico, along with live music and entertainment, this spectacular Fireworks Fiesta promises to be a dazzling display of bright lights, colors and eye-popping entertainment.

Open to the public and completely free of cost, the 2nd Annual National Fireworks Competition is a prelude to the festivities planned for May 31st, when Puerto Vallarta celebrates its 91st anniversary as a municipality and 41st year as an official city.

On May 31, 2009 the main plaza in downtown Puerto Vallarta is the place to be as the fun starts with the Municipal Band performing a free concert in the Plaza de Armas kiosk at 7 pm, followed by a few speeches by city officials, an awards ceremony, and the customary cutting and sharing of the traditionally immense Anniversary cake.

The celebration continues next to the seahorse sculpture on the Malecón, as four Mexican bands - Banda Astilleros, Sonora Caliente, Juan Pablo y sus Apóstoles and the Banda Rosario de Puerto Vallarta - provide music that will have everyone dancing in the streets.

Throughout the evening, the Malecón will be alive with activities and local vendors offering all kinds of local treats. When the music stops at 11 pm, a fantastic fireworks display over Banderas Bay will close this year's anniversary celebrations with a bang.
