At Meeting with President Calderón, Former Health Secretaries Rate Federal Government's Performance Timely and Effective Presidencia de la República go to original
Mexican President Felipe Calderón held a working meeting Thursday at the official Los Pinos residence with former Health Secretaries Jesús Kumate Rodríguez, José Antonio González Fernández, Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez and Guillermo Soberón Acevedo to analyze and evaluate the results of the measures implemented by Federal Government against the Influenza A/H1N1 epidemic.
The President described the status of the health contingency, adding that he has called for the reinforcement of the monitoring of the epidemic to detect any possible outbreak as soon as possible, as a result of the population's return to classes, workplaces and centers of recreation.
For their part, the former secretaries said that Federal Government's behavior was timely, while the measures implemented proved effective. They also stressed the need to be prepared for possible new outbreaks and reduce their scope as much as possible.
The Mexican president said that the experience and commitment of doctors, nurses and workers in this sector was crucial to containing the spread of this virus during this first phase. He also highlighted the participation of Mexicans in the implementation of preventive measures.
He said that the knowledge obtained by Mexico as a result of the emergence of this new virus, the responsibility with which citizens have coped with the epidemic and international cooperation will provide better instruments in the event of new outbreaks.
They agreed over the need to warn the population not to lower its guard regarding preventive measures against the A/H1N1 influenza virus and to remain in close contact with health authorities throughout the country to be able to deal with any re-emergence of this phenomenon in a timely fashion.
The former Health Secretaries stressed the need for Mexico to continue maintaining excellent coordination with the World Health Organization and the Pan American Health Organization, in addition to reinforcing scientific work in Mexico at universities and health centers as well as through the development of specialized laboratories.
During the meeting, President Calderón was accompanied by Health Secretary José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, and his Private Secretary Luis Felipe Bravo Mena. |
