NYC Appointee Resigns over Mexico 'Banditos' Essay Cristian Salazar - Associated Press go to original
New York – A woman appointed to a New York City commission has resigned after coming under withering criticism for saying Mexico should "get a grip on its banditos."
Betsy Perry says she would rather leave her post on the New York City Commission on Women's Issues than become a distraction to Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Perry wrote an article for the Huffington Post last week that included numerous disparaging remarks about Mexico. She wrote among other things that the most favorable image of Mexico right now is the movie "Beverly Hills Chihuahua."
She later apologized for the remarks. Bloomberg called them inappropriate.
Mexican community members had planned a rally Tuesday — the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo — calling for her removal. |
