Christopher Flores was on target for the Mexicans (BSWW/David Diaz)
As the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2009 Dubai already knows its representatives from South America and Europe, it’s now the CONCACAF zone’s turn to send its forerunners to the most spectacular Emirate. Four nations initiated their qualifying campaign on Wednesday to rule the continent and book one out of the two passages at stake in Puerto Vallarta.

The hosts of the CONCACAF Qualifying competition in the Mexican tourist city started off on a high note overwhelming Canada 10-0. Ramon Raya’s men were simply two steps ahead of the Canadians, who were getting a decent result until the start of the second period. After that, the demolition was blatant. Mexico’s absolute standouts were Flores with four goals, and Rosales and Villalobos who netted three and two respectively.

“There’s no easy game or opponent in this tournament. The scoreline might tell you different, but Canada was quite a tough opponent. We made hard work of the win and gained in confidence to face El Salvador on Friday”, explained Mexican head coach Ramon Raya after his side’s curtain-raiser.

Bahamas’ coach Roberto Ceciliano probably imagined the final scoreline to turn out otherwise before the clash with his former side. The Islanders didn’t survive their first ever match at a Qualifier for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup losing to the USA, who confirm their role as favourites in Group B. Slightly overwhelmed by an early Bahamas opener, Eddie Soto’s charges fought back and edged the Islanders 6-2. The Bahamas showed a lot of grit on their International debut, which looks promising for their do-or-die clash with the Costa Ricans tomorrow.
