The Cuscatlecos edged Costa Rica and were crowned CONCACAF Champions (BSWW/David Diaz)
El Salvador produced a near-perfect team performance to halt Costa Rica in their tracks with a comprehensive 6-3 win and lift the CONCACAF Qualifying trophy for the first time ever. Rudis Gonzalez’ disciples can better get used to celebrating titles, as playing like this will undoubtely be rewarded more prizes in the near future. And as if the prestigiuos trophy wasn’t enough, the Cuscatlecos also take home the top scorer and best goalkeeper award in Agustin Ruiz and Jose Portillo respectively.

“We’ve improved a lot compared to last year. The experience we’ve had going to Marseille and compete with the best teams in the world helped us a great deal. We will travel to Dubai to do better than last year”, explained El Salvador Captain Luis Rodas after the final whistle.

Mexico emerged as 3rd place heroes as they stunned the USA with a 5-4 triumph after 36 nerve-wracking minutes. The pouring rain caused extremely difficult playing conditions, but both sides made the best out of the 3rd place play-off. Rosales (2), Villalobos and debutant Lopez (2) were on target for El Tri, while Taguinod, Farberoff, Morales and another debutant Futagaki completed their side’s goals.

Final Standings:

Champion: El Salvador
Runner-up: Costa Rica
3rd place: Mexico
4th place: USA
5th place: Canada
6th place: Bahamas

Individual Awards:

MVP: R. Sterling (CRC)
Top scorer: Agustin Ruiz (SLV) – 8 goals
Best goalkeeper: Jose Portillo (SLV)
