President Felipe Calderón urges citizens to participate more at International Day of Fight against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón urged Mexicans and the authorities at all levels of government to be united in the fight against one of the contemporary challenges of mankind: addictions.

“Today, our country is facing a historic crossroads: to leave things as they area, resign itself, think that nothing will happen, turn away and continue to tolerate crime or to persevere in the fight and recovery of our society through the true enforcement of the rule of law," he said.

During the celebration of the International Day of the Fight against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the President admitted that with this scourge, the country runs a major risk, adding that, as government, it cannot close its eyes to the reality and threat this poses to Mexican society.

That is why, he said, this Administration has acted with firmness and determination against drug distributors, by assuming the costs of the necessary path to re-establish tranquility and security in Mexico and keep children and young people away from drugs.

“Government and society must act and act together on all fronts," repeated the Mexican President in Los Pinos, accompanied by his wife, Margarita Zavala, Secretaries of Health, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos and Public Security, Genero García Luna, as well as Attorney General, Eduardo Medina Mora.

President Calderón said that government's responsibility is to deal with the issue of addictions, including both criminal and health aspects, but also civic participation in the preventive part.

A propos of this, he reported that Federal Government has assigned over 600 million pesos for prevention and treatment, and highlighted the establishment of 320 New Life centers throughout the country to date. He added that the Safe School Program already has 15,000 schools as well as 3,000 public spaces that have been recovered from criminals. Mass engagement in sports and physical activity has also been encouraged through Actívate, Vive Mejor.

He added that that crime wave being experienced in the country has to do with the overflowing of criminal organizations, saying that it is absurd that government should ask citizens to do the authorities' job, which is to pursue and combat criminals.

“I think that this significant day should force us to take us to make a stop and pledge to reinforce, increase, and redouble our efforts in order to combat illicit drug trafficking on the one hand and on the other, for society and government to make a renewed effort to prevent and treat addictions in Mexico's young people and adolescents, since they are largely the key to the future of our country," he said.
