“I would like to make it quite clear that Federal Government's action will continue and be redoubled as long as despicable acts such as this continue to exist. As long as there are abductions, kidnappings and actions that disturb citizens wishing to live in peace, we will continue working hard to deal with, imprison, fight and eradicate organized crime in Mexico," he said.
During a supervision visit to the Maritime Customs House in the Port of Veracruz, the President declared that the moment he was informed of this event, he issued instructions to all members of the Security Cabinet to mobilize their resources to locate this government official and they will not rest until they solve the case.
“One thing should be made quite clear: This type of cowardly acts against the integrity of public servants will not intimidate Federal Government," he said.
Accompanied by state governor Fidel Herrera Beltrán and Finance and Public Credit Secretary, President Felipe Calderón repeated the fact that his government will continue with specific actions to enhance the safety of customs officials, particularly those in positions with the greatest responsibility.
The Mexican president said that customs houses are a crucial element for increasing the efficiency of foreign trade and supporting the growth of the economy, which is why Federal Government has implemented the Plan to Modernize Customs House, which involves investment of nearly six billion pesos and will provide technology for checking containers and merchandise.
“The Customs Modernization Plan is a crucial step to putting Mexico’s customs houses on a par with the economic development our country deserves,” he said.
This plan also includes the Megaports Project which, in conjunction with the US government, will provide customs houses with latest generation radiation detectors for containers and professionalize the personnel working in these places, who will have to pass reliability tests.
“We will not allow crime to threaten the smooth running of the country’s customs houses,” said President Calderón, who urged his audience not to allow organized crime to spread or erode Mexicans’ lives.”
He admitted that customs houses are a key front in the fight against illegality, organized crime and corruption.
“That is why it is essential not only to fight and catch criminals but to destroy their financial operating structure,” he said. |
