Essential to Overcome Indifference in Order to Defeat Organized Crime: President Calderón Presidencia de la República go to original June 20, 2009
| President attended the annual meeting with the Jewish community throughout the country and acknowledged their support in constructing a better future . | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón declared that in order to deal with organized crime, it is essential to overcome indifference, which is both inadmissible and intolerable in governments.
“Perhaps they thought that by remaining indifferent, we would be safe within our houses or government offices, but sooner or later, indifference would take over, which is in fact what happened. I am sure that by overcoming indifference to problems that cannot nor should not be ignored, such as the unpunished action of criminals in the country's life, we will also be able to beat criminals themselves," he said.
At the annual luncheon with Mexico's Jewish community at the Israelite Sports Center, the President made it quite clear that his government's priority is security, regardless of the economic or health situation the country is undergoing, to achieve the aim of repairing the structures that have been taken over throughout the country, at every level.
“The main task of a government or state is security. I should add that our main objective is not drug trafficking itself, our main target as a government is crime, specifically organized crime,” he declared.
Accompanied by his wife Margarita Zavala, and Interior Secretary, Fernando Gómez Mont, the President admitted that this has not been an easy task, since government has faced the accumulated inertia of many years, which enabled this problem to grow under the protection of impunity and corruption.
He said that it is clear that given the false choice between a false peace and the rule of law, government unhesitatingly made the only choice, the law and its fulfillment.
In this respect, he acknowledged that in this struggle, Mexico has enjoyed the support of the Jewish community and Mexicans that work honestly to build their future.
“Mexico is heading in the right direction,” said President Calderón, since it has not lost sight of its main goal, which is to transform the country into a more competitive, modern economy, mainly through effort and the only way people prosper, which is work.
“This direction is work and effort, which is the only way that will enable Mexico to pull through,” he said.
The President recalled that during this world economic crisis, rather than complaining and blaming others, Mexicans have taken several political measures and decisions to protect families' jobs and well-being.
“Mexico requires everyone’s effort. It requires everyone to do what they can do best. And it requires this so that, in adversity, they will be able to build a future of prosperity and well-being for the generations of today and tomorrow," he said. |
