CONCACAF: Mexico vs Trinidad and Tobago Michael Glover - PVNN
Mexico's post Sven Goran Eriksson era was given a much needed boost on Wednesday as Javier Aguirre's side emerged victorious against Trinidad and Tobago. The result leaves Mexico in fourth place in their CONCACAF World Cup qualifying group, a point behind Honduras one place above them.
The top three teams from the group will automatically qualify for South Africa with the fourth placed team facing a play off against fifth place in the South American group. El Tri were dominant throughout the match at Estadio Azteca and the 2-1 final score should have showed a far greater figure in the home team's column.
But goals early on in each half, first from forward Guillermo Franco and then midfielder Óscar Rojas, were enough to secure a vital win in Mexico's bid to qualify for South Africa next summer.
Franco's opening goal came inside the first minute to stun the away side into an early deficit. The Villarreal forward was played through on goal by Nery Castillo and managed to chip the ball over the sprawling body of Ince in the Trinidad goal.
Trinidad's Hayden Tinto almost spoiled the party though when he capitalised on a misplaced pass inside his own half from Andrés Guardado and powered a shot in from 16 yards on the stroke of half time.
But the winner came four minutes after the players returned from the half time interval. Midfielder Óscar Rojas picked the ball up 30 yards from goal and fired a right footed shot into goalkeeper Clayton Ince's top left corner.
Mexico had a number of opportunities to increase their lead throughout the match with chances falling to Guillermo Blanco, skipper Cuauhtemoc Blanco and a number to substitute Miguel Sabha in the second half.
In the end Mexico were made to work hard for a result that should have been a lot more one sided against the bottom team in the group.
But the score line remained 2-1 until the final whistle, a result that Javier Aguirre's men will hope can put them back on track for their World Cup 2010 qualification ambitions.
