The Technical Committee of the Mexican Social Security Institute, or IMSS, authorized spending money to support the 11 minors who remain hospitalized and to family members of the 44 minors who died at the ABC day care center fire in Hermosillo, Sonora.

Daniel Karam Toumeh, IMSS director, said Wednesday that the organization will support family members and victims of this tragedy with medical and psychological care and hospital stays. He added that the boys and girls who were injured would receive for life the services provided by the organization.

After expressing his condolences on behalf of IMSS, he proceeded to outline the details of the accord authorized by the technical committee and related to the tragic events in Hermosillo last Friday.

He said that during the committee's meeting on Wednesday he presented a detailed report dealing with what had happened with the fire at the day care center and of the actions taken by IMSS to support the victims and their families.

Karam also offered for the committee's consideration an accord aimed at expanding medical, psychological and economic support to the fire victims.

"I want to inform everyone that the committee has authorized the expenditure of the necessary financial resources so that we can carry on with the treatment of the children and family members affected by this tragedy," he said.

The IMSS director went on to say that with this money it will be possible to cover the costs of expenditures generated by medical, surgical and hospital attention, as well as pharmaceutical, psychological and rehab attention for the injured children and for the psychological support of their family members.

Also, he said that health services will be expanded for the children who receive coverage from IMSS. Currently, IMSS law states that health services are guaranteed until a person is 16 years old. With these proposed changes it will be possible to offer health services for life to all the children who went through this ordeal.

Karam said that the costs associated with travel expenditures by the parents whose children had been admitted to health centers will be covered by IMSS. Also, accommodation and food expenses, as well as funerary expenses, will be covered by the organization.

The committee also approved the construction of a rehab center in the Hermosillo municipality for people injured by this fire or to any other person who needs this type of attention, Karam said.
