Campo, Calif. — Seventy-three illegal immigrants were found in the trailer of a big rig at a U.S.-Mexico border crossing and the truck's driver was arrested, officials said Monday.
The unidentified 50-year-old driver from Mexico was in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody awaiting prosecution for alien smuggling after his arrest on Sunday, Border Patrol Agent Jerry Conlin said.
The truck was searched after agents observed that the driver appeared nervous, according to a Border Patrol statement.
One of the immigrants found in the trailer, a Guatemalan national, has a criminal past in the United States and was previously deported, Conlin said.
He would be charged with illegal re-entry of a criminal alien, Conlin said.
The remaining 52 men and 20 women were Mexican nationals, he said. Most were being returned to Mexico, although three were remaining in the United States to testify against the driver, Conlin said. |
