March for Justice in Daycare Center Case The News go to original July 07, 2009
Hermosillo - Nearly 40,000 chanting people Saturday marched through the streets of this city to reiterate to authorities their demand for justice in the fire at the ABC daycare center which left 48 children dead June 5 th.
The crowd chanted that they were there to tell the government that the parents of the children were "not alone."
The march came a month after the fact to demand punishment for those responsible and to see that a tragedy like this one, which has left many families deeply hurt, does not occur again.
One day before the midterm elections, there were no political chants nor slogans for political parties.
At the University of Sonora, several speakers demanded that the Federal government arrest and punish all those guilty of criminal negligence including high Mexican Social Security Institute officials for approving that a warehouse be turned into a daycare center.
Hours before the march, Federal prosecutors in Mexico say they had obtained nine arrest warrants for the owners and legal representatives of the daycare center.
The attorney general's office says the suspects, including one health sector official, face charges of improper use of authority. Some are also charged with negligent injury and negligent homicide. State prosecutors in the northern state of Sonora reported charges against 14 people in the June 5 fire. |
