PRD Rebellion vs Andrés López Obrador Magali Juarez - RUMBO de México go to original July 31, 2009
| Andrés Manuel López Obrador | | The man who three years ago led the left-leaning Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) very close to winning the presidential race may be kicked out of the party during a convention to be held over the weekend in Morelia, Michoacán.
Former presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador is to face a trial by a group organized by current party president Jesús Ortega known as "Los Chuchos" who want to "apply the statutes" to those who supported other parties in the recent midterm elections. This would mean the de facto ejection of López Obrador from party ranks.
Leaders from the New Left group published an open letter to party members, including those who were "disloyal" to the party, stating that members should be less radical and accept a policy of alliances in future elections, including even cooperating with the extreme right wing of the National Action Party.
The 29 members who signed the letter made it a point to recall that three years ago López Obrador elevated the PRD in its growth, and now has "pushed it over the cliff" after being unable to manage his defeat as a presidential candidate.
The signers accuse López Obrador of undermining political moves made by party members to reach agreements in Congress by pulling in the opposite direction and creating a general rejection of the party.
They recall in their letter that in those post-election days López Obrador called those in disagreement with him "traitors".
That's why, they claim, if the PRD wants to regain credibility, the first move at the convention is to apply the statutes to López Obrador, who "consciously violated the statutes of the PRD and must be sanctioned, the way it was done with 1,500 othermembers. The exception offends everyone."
Signers said they are going to have to build coalitions with the National Action Party to be competitive. |
