| Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach asks Ottawa to reconsider policy on visa requirements for Mexicans. (MetroNews) | | Edmonton, Alberta - Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach wants to keep the doors of the Prairie province open to Mexicans. On Wednesday he signed an agreement with the Mexican state of Jalisco celebrating its decade of state-state relationship and extending it for five more years.
Stelmach also suggested that Ottawa review its policy on requiring visas for visiting Mexican tourists to keep tourism revenues flowing during hard times. Aside from the tourism income, Stelmach pointed out Alberta benefited from Mexican firemen who helped the province battle forest fires since 2005 during summers.
Jalisco and Alberta has a joint agricultural food processing venture. Canadians also visit Jalisco, Mexico's second largest tourist destination. It has numerous resorts in Puerto Vallarta and is the main source of tequila.
Stelmach and Jalisco Secretary General Fernando Guzman signed the renewal of sisterhood ties between their areas. On the same day Alberta's Minister of Sustainable Resource Development on forest management and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Jalisco Secretary of Rural Development also renewed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand cooperation in the agriculture sector.
Stelmach said in a statement, "The Alberta-Jalisco twinning has bridged the distance between our regions, and helped grow and diversify our economies." Guzman replied, "Our twinning with Alberta is one of our most successful international agreements. We look forward to strengthening and expanding our cooperation with Alberta into new areas." |
