Lawmaker Slain in Southwest Mexico CNN go to original August 20, 2009
Mexico City - Gunmen shot and killed the president of Mexico's Guerrero state congress early Thursday as he was leaving his home.
Armando Chavarria Barrera was shot in his car in the southwestern Mexican city of Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero. The state is best known as home to the internationally known tourist city of Acapulco
Officials said they did not know who shot Chavarria or why.
"This is in the context of the general violence that we have throughout the country, but I can't offer a hypothesis as to his cowardly assassination," Carlos Alvarez Reyes, a member of the local congress, told CNN.
"We are consternated. This is a big blow to our congress."
Chavarria was shot twice - in the head and abdomen - and was found slumped in the car's passenger seat, Chilpancingo police said. The car had five bullet holes, they said.
Chavarria was considered a strong contender for the Guerrero governor's race in 2011. |
