| Edward Kennedy, a friend of Mexico. | | Mexico City - The Mexican Government mourns the death of Democratic Senator for Massachussets, Edward Kennedy, a leading U.S. politician and friend of Mexico's and champion of the causes of numerous Mexicans and Mexican-Americans residing in that country.
Senator Kennedy was an active promoter of international peace and cooperation and played a key role in strengthening the friendship and links between Mexico and the United States. His leadership in the U.S. political sphere and strength of his convictions, particularly those related to human rights and the establishment of fairer economic conditions often placed him at the forefront of legislative debate in his country.
Senator Kennedy worked for over four decades in the legislative sphere, playing a key role in the consolidation of civil rights in the United States. During the Cold War, he encouraged his country to seek rapprochement with other nations and regions in order to reach an understanding with them, advance towards the definition of constructive agendas and reduce the threat to peace caused by the arms race and the ideological discourse between east and west.
In this same spirit, in recent years, he made several efforts to modify globalization by giving it a social meaning. These positions confirmed him as a natural negotiator between the Legislative Branch and other U.S. and foreign stakeholders interested in U.S. foreign policy.
In the U.S. Congress, Senator Kennedy had the opportunity to promote various initiatives linked to the struggle against organized crime, the migratory issue and the defense of migrants. As a good friend of Mexico's, he repeatedly denounced the risks and injustice faced by migrants and advocated improving the treatment they are given when arrested by U.S. authorities.
He used the same determination to reject the operations against undocumented workers in the workplace and publicly hailed their contribution to U.S. economic, political and social life.
As a public figure, he was convinced that borders are a meeting place and a source of opportunity, as a result of which he rejected the construction of the border wall with Mexico as well as any arguments wielded to justify it as a means of improving the region's security.
In order to acknowledge Senator Edward Kennedy’s actions for the benefit of Mexico and its relations with the United States, on July 18 2008, Mexican President Felipe Calderón presented him with the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, band grade.
The Mexican government sends its deepest condolences to Senator Kennedy’s family and the American people for the loss of such an outstanding politician and valuable human being.
