A BanderasNews Brief & Upcoming Events Mike A. Arevalo - PVNN September 07, 2009
There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.
New Taxes?
In a recent interview, North Coast Regional Tourism Director José Ludwig Estrada Virgen stated that augmenting taxes would only increase Puerto Vallarta's economic problems. Emphasizing the fact that new taxes are not the answer to the port’s problems, he added, "Instead of creating new taxes, we need to find new measures to generate income."
He went on to say that "Though the United States government is investing money to recuperate its economy, Mexico is actually doing the complete opposite. It'll take more than just one thing to revive Mexico's economy, we need to find different solutions for different areas of the country. For example, in Puerto Vallarta we need to focus on replenishing tourism, unlike other areas where tourism is not a source of income."
Cruise Ship Arrival Cancelled
The Carnival Splendor cruise ship that was scheduled to arrive in Puerto Vallarta last Wednesday, was cancelled due to the threat posed by hurricane "Jimena," which threatened the Pacific Coast of Mexico last week.
It was reported that the reason for the cancelation was simply to prevent any possible threat to the passengers and the ship will arrive in the port on the next scheduled date. Nevertheless, the cancelation will definitely affect Puerto Vallarta’s economy, especially since the port was counting on the ship to bring thousands of visitors, "but we simply cannot take the risk of sailing in turbulent waters," said a cruise line representative.
No Problem in the Timeshare Industry
Just like traditional hotels, the time share industry in Puerto Vallarta also managed to keep itself full during 2008. This year, despite the current economic problems, was also positive. The president of Adeprotur (Lurdes Ayala) affirmed that although the first months of the year were not exactly the best, the expectations for this winter are good and they expect a great amount of tourism. She indicated that some of the hotels in the city reported an higher occupancy than expected, some even reached 100% mark.
