(AP/Eduardo Verdugo) | | Mexico City — U.N. secretary-general Ban Ki-moon offered humanitarian aid Tuesday to hundreds of people affected by torrential rains that flooded homes and killed at least two people in a Mexico City suburb.
Ban, who was in Mexico City to attend a conference on disarmament, did not give details about the aid.
He accompanied President Felipe Calderon on a visit to the suburb of Tlalnepantla, where a water drain broke during heavy rains Sunday, knocking down walls and sending cars floating down streets filled with 5 feet (1.5 meters) of water.
Officials in Mexico state, where Tlalnepantla is located, said an 85-year-old man and an 82-year-old woman who died in the area at the time of the downpour are being considered victims of the downpour – although a cause of death had not yet been determined.
At least 2,000 homes in a 40-block radius were flooded, and at least 50 cars damaged.
The storm briefly closed Mexico City's airport and swamped some subway stations that were still out of operation Tuesday.
Before the visit to the flood zone, Ban and Calderon met to discuss topics including disarmament, the world financial crisis, climate change and swine flu, the presidential office said in a statement.
Ban congratulated Calderon for showing strong leadership during the virus' outbreak in Mexico during the spring, it said. |
