Mexicans Abroad Return to Action Andrea Martinez - Goal.com go to original September 22, 2009
| (Yiorgos Karahalis/Reuters) | | The Sept. 19-20 weekend will go down as a weekend in which many of the Mexicans abroad made a return to action. Whether it was a comeback from a short layoff or a long time away due to injury, players such as Rafa Márquez and Claudio Suárez hit the field this week after each had missed a large portion of the last several months.
The last week also featured several midweek Champions League matches for Mexicans abroad.
SPAIN
Rafael Márquez (Barcelona) - Márquez spent all 90 minutes on the bench for the game against Inter Milan in the Champions League match midweek. The defender was finally able to make his debut in the new season in the 5-2 win over Atlético Madrid during the last 15 minutes of the game.
Andrés Guardado (Deportivo La Coruña) - Guardado was unable to be on the winning side as Deportivo fell 3-2 against Espanyol. The midfielder played all 90 minutes in the game.
Hugo Sánchez (Almería) - Sánchez achieved the first win of the season for the club with a 1-0 triumph against Getafe.
Jonathan Dos Santos (Barca Atletic) - Mallorca B were held by Dos Santos' team to a 1-1 draw. Dos Santos played all 90 minutes in the midfield to gain a point.
Juan Seguro (Real Unión Club de Irún) - Seguro did not make into onto the field for the 2-0 loss against Rayo Vallecano.
GERMANY
Ricardo Osorio (Stuttgart) - The defender continues to be absent for Stuttgart's games. This weekend Osorio didn't make it onto the bench to watch as his team lost 2-0 against FC Koln.
NETHERLANDS
Carlos Salcido (PSV) - Salcido played the first half of PSV's 3-1 win over Feyenoord and received a yellow card in the third minute.
Francisco `Maza' Rodríguez (PSV)- Maza came in for Salcido to play the entire second half for the 3-1 win pver Feyenoord.
Héctor Moreno (AZ Alkmaar) - Moreno debuted in the Champions League midweek with a 1-0 loss against Olympiakos. In the Eredivisie Moreno returned for Alkmaar's 1-0 loss against NEC Nijmegen where a bad clearance in the 86th minute gave way to the opposition's goal.
ENGLAND
Giovani Dos Santos (Tottenham Hotspur) - Dos Santos watched from the bench as Spurs lost to Chelsea 3-0. However, he saw some action and scored a goal in the 3-2 midweek friendly game against QPR.
Carlos Vela (Arsenal) - The Gunners continue without Vela's services because of his ankle injury. In the Champions League Arsenal was able to win 3-2 over Standard de Liege. During their premier league game Arsenal won 4-0 against Wigan.
Guillermo Franco (West Ham) - Franco's deal was made official and the striker was given the number 10 shirt to wear. The new Hammer's player did not make an appearance in West Ham's 3-2 loss against Liverpool.
ITALY
Miguel Layún (Atlanta) - Layún remained on the bench for Atalanta's 4-1 loss against Bari.
HUNGARY
Juan `Kichi' Pérez (FC Tatabanya) - Pérez did not participate in the 3-0 win against Birkirkara II.
UKRAINE
Nery Castillo (Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk)- Castillo returned to action in the last four minutes of the game in the 3-0 win of Karpaty Lviv.
GREECE
Antonio De Nigris (Larissa) - Did not dress for Larissa's 2-1 loss to Irakla
UNITED STATES
Cuauhtémoc Blanco (Chicago) - Started and played 62 minutes in Chicago's 2-2 draw with Columbus. Blanco left the match with an injured hamstring.
Claudio Suárez (Chivas USA) - Played final 24 minutes in Chivas USA's 0-0 tie at Seattle.
Mariano Trujillo (Chivas USA) - Played final 32 minutes in Chivas USA's 0-0 draw at Seattle. Trujillo picked up a yellow card in the 76th minute for dissent.
