Update: By popular demand, the Day of the Dead Shrine Making Classes at The Bucerias (Boo-cerias) Art Walk Plaza have been extended to November 2nd.

The Boo-cerias Art Walk Plaza is located at 62 Lazaro Cardenas, between Benito Juarez and Galeana. For more information, email Christy Beguesse at thebuceriasartwalkplaza(at)gmail.com.
Two fun activities in advance of the upcoming Day of the Dead celebration are planned to take place at The Bucerias (Boo-cerias) Art Walk Plaza.

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls' Day) is a Mexican holiday celebrated by focusing on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died.

The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints' Day which occurs on Nov 1st and All Souls' Day which occurs on Nov 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed as well as visiting graves with these as gifts.

From October 26th to the 30th, there will be Day of the Dead shrine-making classes. On each day, there will be a 4-hour class. There will be a limit of 6 students per class. Participants will learn how to make the traditional Mexican sugar skulls, papel picado and flores de papel china.

A short talk will also be given about how to create a proper shrine and the significance of special items. The class costs $500 pesos and includes all of the necessary materials. Each day's class starts at 10 a.m., Jalisco time. Reservations are required.

On October 31st, Hollow's Eve, The Boo-cerias Art Walk Plaza will host a Catrina Costume Contest.

The Day of the Dead characters Catrin and Catrina were made popular by renowned Mexican author, journalist and political cartoonist Guadalupe Posada, (1852-1913). Posada is credited for popularizing the Day of the Dead celebrations, especially through the creation of skeletal cartoons that capture the Mexican attitude towards death. The name Catrina means "dapper," and she reflects the fashion of the times.

There will be 3 contest categories, Best Catrina Costume, Best Catrina Hat and Best Photo, with a $500 peso cash prize for the winner of each one. The contest is free. The Best Photo will be the one that embodies the spirit of the night.

The prize for the photo will be announced and awarded on November 5th, at The Bucerias Art Walk, the first of the season. Photo entries must be emailed to thebuceriasartwalkplaza(at)gmail.com by midnight November 4th.

"We have already about 12 Mexican photographers that will be here to participate, kind of a performance art thing, but anyone can submit a photo, professional or not," says Christy Beguesse, organizer of both of the Day of the Dead events.

The costume contest starts at 7 pm, Jalisco time, and will include refreshments of Sangria and dulces.
